Planning for the renovation of Joensuu Main Library begins

Joensuu Main Library is almost 40 years old and the building is in need of renewal. The city of Joensuu begins planning the renovation in 2026. If the project goes as planned and the city council approves it, the renovation project may happen during 2029–2031.

When the main library was completed in the 1990s, library operations relied heavily on lending books. With the revised Library Act, the basic tasks of the library include also spaces for learning, hobbies, working and civic activities. These functions and their placement are also being reconsidered.

Locals have many opportunities to participate

During autumn 2026, the library collects wishes from residents of Joensuu regarding the renovated main library. In spring 2027, a few different models will be created based on the wishes.

2026 events:

• The Dream Library wish tree is on display from 14 August to 25 September 2026 in the lower lobby of Joensuu Main Library. You can also share your ideas online.
• An event series with four meetings, each with its own theme. The first event is on 1 September 2026 from 5 to 7 pm with the headline My Library. The event will be held at the main library and there is no need to register in advance.
• An online survey in October.
